Wide-bodied trucks added to Off-Highway Research global coverage

Following the publication of a research report on the wide-bodied truck industry in China in 2024, Off-Highway Research has added this product type to its global database of construction equipment sales and production.

Wide-bodied trucks were developed in China by strengthening on-road truck chassis, improving their drivetrains and suspensions to allow them to be driven off-road and (as the name suggests) adding wide bodies to increase their payloads. Although less capable off-road and less durable than traditional dump trucks, the relatively low cost of these machines have made them a popular alternative to rigid and articulated dump trucks.

The global market for wide-bodied trucks was just under 30,000 machines last year. The bulk of these sales were in China, but the country’s large OEMs are popularising the concept overseas, particularly in Southeast Asia. Wide bodied trucks have only been sold to date in emerging markets, and these figures are recorded in Off-Highway Research’s Indian, South American and global databases. However, this type of truck is not a feature of the markets in Europe, Japan or North America.

Although mostly powered by diesel engines, more than 10 per cent of wide-bodied trucks sold are battery electric. Again, these are sold both within China – the major market – as well as in export markets, predominantly in Asia.
