Building slowdown hits crane sales in Germany

Mobile crane sales in Germany have failed to return to their pre-Covid highs, according to Off-Highway Research’s new report, The Mobile Crane Industry in Germany. In the early years of the pandemic sales were restricted by production bottlenecks. More recently a downturn in construction activity has subdued the market, with the slowdown in housing particularly affecting sales of smaller cranes. There is also a general long-term trend for buyers to trade up to larger machines, which is leading to fewer, bigger machines to be sold.

Following a small slump in sales this year, the segment is expected to return to growth from 2025 onwards.

“With peak inflation now in the past and interest rates falling, 2025 is forecast to bring some relief, with a slight growth of 2 per cent expected. This forecast is for all mobile crane types, but there will be varying growth rates for each of them. Of these, the greatest market potential is undoubtedly for all terrain cranes,” said the report.
